Not too special, but the only thing that makes it worth it is the doubled world height of 256 instead of 128. Now we can build taller buildings. Also sky cities and other flying objects can be built higher.

I've been looking forward to an increase of the world height for so long and it's finally coming!

From what I have heard,(not sure if this is for sure or set in stone yet) I will admit I would be far more excited if there was 64 being added to both the top and bottom of the map instead of 128 to the top. Would allow for bigger caves/ravines, more layers for more ores, ect. However I understand why he is doing it the way he is, to reduce lag.

That also means people with a higher ping will have even more chunk loading issues.

The new map format is different, and while bigger, it's not a signifgant size increase (I think that it was 1/3 bigger than the old map). The basic jist of what he did to make the map take up less room was change the save system form x/z/y to y/z/x. The full technical stuff is here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/news/404-n...-released/
And Para, you can expect that to come when the compression gets better, it's not on he bottom now because the save size would increase twofold and it's still more or less a test.

Hmm, Now that you can build even higher...you can make even larger jumps from height limit to bedrock. I smell better griefer traps.
